September Social Security and SSI Payments: Here’s When Checks Will Arrive

Around 75 million Americans receive payments administered by the Social Security Administration. More than 59 million of those beneficiaries are retirees, while the remaining recipients include people under age 65 with disabilities and younger survivors of Social Security beneficiaries.

The SSA manages different benefit programs, including traditional Social Security retirement benefits and Supplemental Security Income, or SSI.

SSI is generally available to qualifying people with disabilities, individuals who are blind, and seniors with limited income and resources.

Average Social Security and SSI Payments

The average Social Security benefit currently stands at about $2,082. However, the amount an individual receives can vary significantly depending on factors such as lifetime earnings, work history and the age at which benefits are claimed.

For SSI recipients, the average monthly payment is approximately $737.

The federal maximum SSI benefit is $994 for an eligible individual and $1,491 for an eligible couple.

September 2026 SSI Payment Date

SSI benefits are usually distributed on the first day of each month. When the first falls on a weekend or federal holiday, payments are generally issued on the preceding business day.

No adjustment is needed for September 2026, meaning SSI recipients are scheduled to receive their payment on Tuesday, September 1.

September Social Security Payment Dates

Regular Social Security payments are issued according to a beneficiary’s date of birth.

Recipients born between the 1st and 10th of any month are generally paid on the second Wednesday. Those born from the 11th through the 20th receive benefits on the third Wednesday, while beneficiaries born from the 21st through the 31st are typically paid on the fourth Wednesday.

For September 2026, the payment schedule is:

  • September 9: Birthdays from the 1st through the 10th
  • September 16: Birthdays from the 11th through the 20th
  • September 23: Birthdays from the 21st through the 31st

People who began receiving Social Security before May 1997, or those receiving both Social Security and SSI, generally follow a different payment schedule. In those cases, SSI is typically paid on the first of the month and Social Security on the third.

SSI Payment Changes Coming in October and November

The regular Wednesday Social Security schedule will continue over the following months, but SSI recipients will see changes because of weekends and federal holidays.

SSI beneficiaries are expected to receive two payments in October: one on October 1 and another on October 30.

The October 30 payment represents the November SSI benefit because November 1, 2026 falls on a Sunday. As a result, there will be no separate SSI payment issued during November.

Receiving two deposits in October does not mean beneficiaries are receiving an additional monthly benefit. Instead, the November payment is simply being issued early.

Two SSI Payments Scheduled for December

SSI beneficiaries will also receive two payments in December 2026.

The first is scheduled for December 1, while another will be issued on December 31. The December 31 deposit represents the January 2027 SSI payment because January 1, 2027 is a federal holiday.

Social Security recipients should see their September 2026 benefits arrive according to the regular Wednesday payment schedule, while SSI beneficiaries are scheduled to receive their payment on September 1.

However, SSI recipients should pay particular attention to the months ahead, as calendar changes will result in two deposits during both October and December and no SSI deposit during November.
