B.C. Mother Says Her 23-Year-Old Son Was Captain of Charter Boat That Sank
The grieving mother of a young fisherman has identified her son as the captain of a charter boat that sank in British Columbia waters last Sunday. She says her son had previously raised concerns about the poor condition of the vessel before the deadly incident.
Ashley Lin said in an emotional interview that her 23-year-old son, Chen Ming, is one of six people still missing and feared drowned after the boat went down with 10 people on board.
Young Captain Among Six Missing
According to Lin, Chen Ming was the captain of the charter boat involved in the sinking.
The vessel reportedly went down in deep waters off British Columbia, leaving six people missing. They are feared to have drowned.
Lin described her son as a responsible young man and said the tragedy has left the family devastated.
Charter Company Identified as Top Fishing
Lin said the boat was operated by a company known as Top Fishing in English and Haishang in Chinese.
She has urged the owner of the charter company to publicly explain what happened and issue a statement about the incident.
A person who answered the company’s phone this week said they knew nothing about the sinking before ending the call.
Family Says Boat Had Safety Concerns
In a joint Mandarin-language interview, Chen’s mother and his girlfriend, Hailey Lee, said the 30-foot boat had a broken side door.
They said the vessel was in poor condition, and Lin claimed her son had complained about its state before the sinking.
The boat was carrying 10 people when it went down.
Mother Calls Son Responsible
Lin, who is from Richmond, British Columbia, said Chen was a “responsible child.”
Her comments suggest she believes her son took his duties seriously and had concerns about the boat’s condition before the incident.
The family is now seeking answers from the charter company and others connected to the vessel.
