Poilievre Appoints Conservatives’ Point Person for Alberta Referendum

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has appointed Alberta MP Dane Lloyd to oversee the party’s campaign ahead of Alberta’s referendum on separation, scheduled for this fall.

The announcement was made through a letter from Poilievre, outlining Lloyd’s new responsibilities.

Lloyd has represented the Parkland riding since 2017 and previously served as a reservist in the Canadian Armed Forces. Poilievre said Lloyd’s experience and leadership make him well suited for the role.

Conservatives Back a United Canada

Poilievre emphasized that the Conservative Party supports Alberta remaining part of Canada while acknowledging that many Albertans have legitimate concerns with the current federal system.

He said the party’s goal is to listen to Albertans rather than dismiss their frustrations, arguing that policies such as expanding pipelines, lowering taxes, increasing housing and improving public safety would benefit both Alberta and the rest of Canada.

Lloyd later said he was honoured by the appointment and reaffirmed his belief in a united Canada.

Federal Government Also Preparing

Last month, Prime Minister Mark Carney appointed Morgan Breitkreutz as the federal government’s senior adviser on Alberta.

The adviser will coordinate Ottawa’s response to the referendum and oversee key projects, including the proposed pipeline to Canada’s West Coast.

Mixed Political Reactions

Separatist campaign organizer Mitch Sylvestre, who led the petition for the referendum, said he expected the Conservatives to support the “remain” campaign. He argued that Alberta’s economic importance and the party’s strong electoral presence in the province make that position predictable.

Political consultant Evan Menzies welcomed Lloyd’s appointment, describing him as someone who understands Albertans’ concerns and can effectively engage voters frustrated with Ottawa.

However, Lori Williams, a political analyst at Mount Royal University, warned that emphasizing dissatisfaction with the federal government could unintentionally strengthen support for separatism.

Alberta Referendum Question

One of the questions on Alberta’s October referendum will ask voters whether the province should remain in Confederation or support beginning the legal process for a future binding referendum on separation.
