2 ASX Investment Ideas to Help Earn $200 in Monthly Passive Income in 2027

Australian investors looking to build a reliable passive income stream may find attractive opportunities among ASX-listed investments. Some shares can offer a combination of regular dividend income and the potential for long-term capital growth.

Two listed investment companies (LICs) currently stand out for their relatively high dividend yields and history of maintaining or increasing shareholder distributions: Future Generation Australia Ltd (ASX: FGX) and WAM Microcap Ltd (ASX: WMI).

Future Generation Australia Ltd (ASX: FGX)

Future Generation Australia is a listed investment company that invests in a diversified collection of Australian-focused investment funds.

One feature that separates FGX from many investment companies is its fee structure. Investors are not charged management or performance fees because participating fund managers provide their services without charge. Instead, the company contributes approximately 1% of its net assets each year to charities supporting young Australians.

FGX spreads its investments across more than a dozen Australian equity fund managers, including names such as Wilson Asset Management, Vinva, Eley Griffiths, Paradice and Firetrail. This structure provides investors with exposure to a broad range of investment strategies and ASX companies.

FGX Dividend Yield

Future Generation Australia has increased its annual dividend per share every year since 2015.

For FY26, the company is expected to pay approximately 7.6 cents per share in annual dividends.

Based on the share price at the time of the original analysis, this represents a potential grossed-up dividend yield of around 8%, including franking credits.

WAM Microcap Ltd (ASX: WMI)

WAM Microcap is another listed investment company, but its investment strategy focuses primarily on smaller ASX-listed businesses.

Small-cap companies can provide significant growth opportunities because many are still in the earlier stages of their development.

They may also receive less coverage from institutional investors and analysts, potentially creating opportunities for experienced fund managers to identify undervalued businesses.

Strong Historical Portfolio Performance

The WAM Microcap portfolio has generated an average return of approximately 13.1% per year before fees, expenses and taxes.

That performance was slightly more than twice the return of its small-cap benchmark, making its historical investment performance particularly notable.

Strong portfolio returns have also supported WAM Microcap’s ability to distribute dividends to shareholders.

Its annual dividend per share has increased every year since FY18, except in FY24, when the dividend remained unchanged.

For FY26, WAM Microcap is expected to distribute approximately 10.7 cents per share.

At the time of the original calculation, this equated to a potential grossed-up dividend yield of about 10.8%, including franking credits.

How Much Would You Need to Invest for $200 a Month?

When the estimated dividend yields of FGX and WMI are combined, their average grossed-up yield is approximately 9.4%, including franking credits.

Generating $200 per month in passive income would require annual income of:

$200 × 12 = $2,400 per year

At an average dividend yield of 9.4%, an investor would need approximately $25,500 invested to theoretically produce $2,400 in annual income.

However, dividend payments and yields can change over time, and future distributions are not guaranteed.

Diversification Remains Important

Although both investments provide exposure to multiple ASX companies, relying on only two investments for passive income can still create concentration risk.

Investors seeking a larger or more dependable income portfolio may consider spreading their capital across additional companies, sectors or investment vehicles.

Should You Buy Future Generation Australia Shares?

Future Generation Australia may appeal to investors seeking diversified Australian equity exposure combined with dividend income and a philanthropic investment model.

However, it should not automatically be considered suitable for every portfolio. The original analysis also noted that Motley Fool investing expert Scott Phillips did not include Future Generation Australia among his five preferred stocks to buy at the time.

Investors should therefore consider their own financial objectives, risk tolerance and investment strategy before buying any ASX share.

Future Generation Australia and WAM Microcap offer two potentially attractive ASX passive income opportunities, with estimated grossed-up dividend yields of 8% and 10.8% respectively.

Based on their combined average yield of approximately 9.4%, an investment of around $25,500 could theoretically generate $200 per month in dividend income.

Their dividend histories and diversified portfolios may appeal to income-focused investors, but dividends are never guaranteed and broader diversification should remain an important part of any long-term investment strategy.
