DWP Warns Pensioners and Universal Credit Claimants About August Payments
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a new reminder to people receiving Universal Credit, State Pension, PIP, Child Benefit and several other benefits ahead of the August bank holiday.
With Monday, August 31, 2026 falling on a bank holiday, some benefit payments that would normally be made on that date will arrive earlier.
DWP Payments Due on August 31 Will Arrive Early
People who are scheduled to receive a DWP benefit payment on Monday, August 31 will instead receive their money on Friday, August 28.
Claimants whose usual payment date falls on another day should receive their benefits as normal.
The change only affects the payment date. The amount of benefit being paid will remain unchanged.
The DWP generally moves payments to the previous working day when the normal payment date falls on a weekend or bank holiday, although arrangements can sometimes vary.
Government Confirms Early August Bank Holiday Payments
Minister for Social Security and Disability Sir Stephen Timms confirmed that payments affected by the August bank holiday would be issued ahead of schedule.
He said the change is intended to make sure families and older people can access their money without disruption during the bank holiday period.
Timms also highlighted wider government measures aimed at supporting households, including reducing energy costs, increasing the National Minimum Wage, helping children out of poverty and supporting people into secure employment.
Which Benefits Are Affected?
The August bank holiday payment change may affect people receiving the following benefits:
- Attendance Allowance
- Carer’s Allowance
- Child Benefit
- Disability Living Allowance
- Employment and Support Allowance
- Income Support
- Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Pension Credit
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- State Pension
- Tax Credits
- Universal Credit
Claimants should check their usual payment date to determine whether the bank holiday adjustment applies to them.
Earlier Payment Could Affect Household Budgeting
Although receiving money earlier may appear helpful, claimants should remember that their next payment will return to its normal schedule.
This means the August payment may need to cover a slightly longer period than usual. People managing tight household budgets may therefore need to plan carefully, particularly while living costs remain high.
The amount of benefit received will not increase because of the earlier payment.
Bank Holidays Can Affect Payments Across the UK
DWP payment arrangements can also be affected when bank holidays differ between parts of the UK.
For example, even where a particular bank holiday does not apply in every UK nation, payment schedules can still be brought forward where necessary.
More Bank Holiday Payment Changes Expected at Christmas
After the August bank holiday, the remaining bank holidays in 2026 include Christmas Day and December 28, with Boxing Day falling on a Saturday.
These dates could result in further changes to benefit payment schedules later in the year, so claimants should check official payment information closer to Christmas.
Anyone expecting Universal Credit, State Pension, PIP, Child Benefit or another affected payment on August 31, 2026, should receive it early on Friday, August 28.
Payment amounts will stay the same, but recipients should budget carefully because the following payment is expected to return to its normal date.
