Person Dies After Drowning at Johnson Lake in Banff National Park, Police Say
A person drowned at Johnson Lake in Banff National Park on Sunday evening, according to the RCMP. Emergency crews responded to the incident, with the individual recovered from the lake at approximately 7 p.m.
RCMP Says Death Is Not Considered Suspicious
RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Gina Slaney said the death is not being treated as suspicious.
Authorities have not released further details about the person who died because officials are still working to notify the individual’s next-of-kin.
Emergency Crews Responded to Johnson Lake
Visitor safety personnel from Parks Canada’s Banff field unit attended the incident and were working to provide additional information. Alberta EMS paramedics were also present at the scene.
Johnson Lake is located about 10 kilometres from the Banff townsite, near Lake Minnewanka and Two Jack Lake. It is considered one of the more popular lakes in Banff National Park.
Third Confirmed Bow Valley Drowning This Year
Sunday’s incident was the third confirmed drowning in the Bow Valley this year.
Canmore police are also investigating the death of a 52-year-old Canmore man who was discovered in the Bow River on Sunday morning.
Other drowning incidents reported in the region this year include a death at Canmore’s Quarry Lake on August 1 and another at Johnston Canyon in Banff National Park on May 1.
The drowning at Johnson Lake adds to a series of fatal water-related incidents reported across the Bow Valley this year.
Authorities have said the Johnson Lake death is not suspicious, while further information is expected after the person’s family has been notified.
