Suspect Arrested One Year After Cyclist’s Death at Okanagan GranFondo
A man has been arrested and charged in connection with a serious crash during the Okanagan Granfondo cycling race that killed one cyclist and left two others badly injured.
The incident occurred almost exactly one year before the arrest was announced. Penticton RCMP confirmed in a news release that the suspect was taken into custody on Monday.
Dangerous Driving Charges Approved
The B.C. Prosecution Service has approved three charges against the accused:
- One count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death
- Two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm
Police have not released further details about the accused or the circumstances leading to the arrest.
Crash Occurred Near Penticton
The collision happened on July 13, 2025, along White Lake Road near St. Andrew’s Drive, south of Penticton.
The Okanagan Granfondo was a well-known mass-participation cycling event that attracted thousands of riders annually. The crash resulted in the death of one cyclist, while two additional participants suffered serious injuries.
Staff Sgt. Scott Hanry acknowledged the lasting effect of the tragedy, stating that the incident had deeply affected the community. He added that police continue to think of the victims’ families and everyone impacted.
Police Investigation Remains Active
Although charges have now been approved, Penticton RCMP said the investigation is still ongoing. Authorities have not indicated whether additional information or further charges may follow.
Okanagan Granfondo Cancelled Indefinitely
Following the 2025 event, organizers announced that the Okanagan Granfondo would be cancelled indefinitely.
The decision was attributed to rising expenses associated with traffic control and safety management required to operate the large cycling race.
