Two Drivers Charged With Impaired Driving in Separate Gordie Howe Bridge Incidents, Windsor Police Say
Windsor police have charged two motorists with drug-impaired driving following separate incidents at the Gordie Howe International Bridge.
Both drivers were entering Canada when Canada Border Services Agency officers referred them for secondary inspection and later requested assistance from the Windsor Police Service.
Marijuana Odour Leads to First Arrest
The first incident occurred shortly before 8 p.m. on Thursday. Police officers were called to the bridge to assist border officials with an arrest.
According to a police news release issued Friday, CBSA officers directed a driver to secondary inspection after detecting a strong smell of marijuana coming from his vehicle.
Police said the man appeared unable to stand or walk without assistance. He also displayed several signs of possible impairment, including glossy eyes and difficulty answering questions.
The driver was arrested and taken to Windsor police headquarters, where he failed standardized physical coordination tests.
The 41-year-old man was charged with operating a conveyance while impaired by drugs.
Nitrous Gas Canister Found in Second Vehicle
The second incident happened approximately five hours later, at around 1 a.m. on Friday.
Windsor police were again called to the Gordie Howe International Bridge to support CBSA officers with an impaired-driving investigation.
A motorist entering Canada had been sent to secondary inspection after border officers noticed multiple signs of impairment. Police said a canister containing nitrous gas was also discovered inside the vehicle.
The driver was transported to Windsor police headquarters and failed standardized physical coordination tests.
The 22-year-old man was charged with operating a conveyance while impaired by drugs.
The two separate investigations resulted in drug-impaired driving charges against drivers aged 41 and 22. Both cases began during secondary inspections at the Gordie Howe International Bridge before Windsor police conducted further impairment testing.
