One Person Dies After Fire Erupts in Toronto Apartment Building, Paramedics Say
One person has died following a two-alarm fire that broke out Tuesday morning at a high-rise residential building in Toronto.
Emergency crews responded to the incident at the intersection of Neilson Road and McLevin Avenue after receiving a fire call at approximately 7:39 a.m.
Victim Found Inside Fire-Damaged Unit
Deputy Fire Chief Paul Fitzgerald said firefighters searched the building for additional fire hazards and located one adult inside the affected apartment with no vital signs. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials believe the victim was a resident or occupant of the apartment where the fire originated.
Firefighters Quickly Contained the Blaze
Upon arrival, crews observed heavy black smoke coming from the building. The fire was located on the 16th floor, and firefighters used thermal imaging equipment to identify the exact unit involved.
According to Fitzgerald, the apartment was completely engulfed in flames when crews entered. Firefighters rapidly extinguished the blaze while another team performed CPR on the victim during search operations.
Residents Evacuated as Safety Checks Continue
Authorities said there is currently no indication that neighbouring apartments suffered damage from the fire.
Residents on the 16th floor were evacuated as a precaution. They will be allowed to return once firefighters complete safety inspections and confirm the building is secure.
Investigation Into Cause of Fire
The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation.
Toronto Fire Services has notified the Ontario Fire Marshal, which will work alongside Toronto police to determine how the fire started and the events leading up to the fatal incident.
