2027 VA Disability COLA: How Much Could Benefits Increase Under the Latest Forecast?
Veterans receiving VA disability compensation could see their monthly benefits increase by approximately 3.8% in 2027, based on one of the latest cost-of-living adjustment projections.
If that estimate becomes official, some veterans with a 100% disability rating could receive nearly $150 more per month.
However, the 3.8% figure is not final. The official 2027 COLA will be calculated using inflation data from July, August and September 2026, with the Social Security Administration expected to announce the confirmed adjustment in October.
VA Disability Benefits Follow the Social Security COLA
VA disability compensation is adjusted each year using the same COLA percentage applied to Social Security benefits.
Veterans do not need to file a separate application or request the increase. Once the new COLA is approved, eligible VA disability payments are adjusted automatically.
How Much Could VA Disability Payments Rise in 2027?
Under a projected 3.8% COLA, a veteran with a 100% disability rating and no dependents could see monthly compensation rise from $3,938.58 in 2026 to about $4,088.25 in 2027.
That would amount to an estimated monthly increase of approximately $149.67.
Projected payments for veterans without dependents could include:
- 70% disability rating: $1,808.45 to approximately $1,877.17, an increase of $68.72.
- 80% disability rating: $2,102.15 to about $2,182.03, adding $79.88 per month.
- 90% disability rating: $2,362.30 to approximately $2,452.07, an increase of $89.77.
- 100% disability rating: $3,938.58 to about $4,088.25, an increase of roughly $149.67.
Is the 3.8% VA COLA for 2027 Confirmed?
No. The projected 3.8% COLA remains an estimate, and the final adjustment could move higher or lower depending on inflation during the third quarter of 2026.
Some projections have suggested that the 2027 COLA could potentially reach 4.7%.
If a 4.7% increase were approved, a veteran with a 100% disability rating and no dependents could receive approximately $4,123.69 per month, around $185 more than the 2026 monthly rate.
Other VA Benefits Could Also Increase
Veterans with qualifying spouses, children or other dependents may receive higher monthly disability payments than the amounts listed above.
The annual COLA percentage also applies to several other VA benefits, including:
- Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability (TDIU)
- Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)
- Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)
When Would the 2027 VA Disability Increase Begin?
The updated VA disability compensation rates are expected to take effect on December 1, 2026.
Veterans should therefore see the first payment reflecting the higher rate at the end of December 2026, assuming the annual COLA adjustment follows the usual schedule.
A projected 3.8% COLA could provide a meaningful increase in VA disability compensation for 2027, with veterans rated 100% potentially receiving nearly $150 more each month.
However, the final percentage will depend on inflation data from July through September and will not be confirmed until the official COLA announcement in October.
