Scarborough Man Charged in Fatal Brampton Shooting as Police Search for Two Suspects
Peel Regional Police have charged a 24-year-old Scarborough man with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Jamal Edwards in Brampton.
Bakiram Balakumar was arrested following an investigation into the June 4 shooting. Police said Edwards, 38, was discovered suffering from multiple gunshot wounds near Sandalwood Parkway and Crown Victoria Drive.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Balakumar remains in custody and is expected to appear for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice.
Police Search for Two Armed Suspects
Investigators are continuing to look for two other suspects believed to have been involved in the shooting.
Police have released surveillance images showing the individuals and warned that both should be considered armed and dangerous. Members of the public have been instructed not to approach them.
Anyone who sees either suspect should immediately call 911. Police are also asking people with information about their identities or locations to contact investigators.
Separate Suspicious Death Investigated Near Train Tracks
Peel police are also investigating an unrelated suspicious death in Brampton after a body was discovered near railway tracks in the Queen Street East and Theatre Lane area.
The cause of death has not yet been determined and an autopsy is expected to provide further information. However, police said the case is not currently being investigated as a homicide.
Authorities also confirmed that no train was involved in the incident.
Officers remained at the scene while the investigation continued. The victim’s identity was being withheld until family members could be notified.
Brampton Residents Urged to Remain Alert
The murder investigation and the separate suspicious-death probe have resulted in increased police activity across Brampton.
With two suspects in the shooting case still unaccounted for, residents are being encouraged to remain cautious and report any information that could assist investigators.
Police have stressed that the public should avoid approaching the wanted individuals and allow trained officers to handle the situation.
