Tornado Warning Issued for Areas of Southern Ontario

Environment Canada has issued an extreme-impact tornado warning for parts of the Niagara Region after meteorologists detected a powerful thunderstorm that could be producing a tornado near Niagara Falls.

The warning was released at 12:43 p.m. EDT, with forecasters reporting that the storm is travelling east at approximately 25 km/h. The system is also capable of generating destructive wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rainfall.

The storm is expected to affect several communities, including:

• Niagara Falls
• Thorold
• Virgil
• St. Davids
• Queenston
• Chippawa

Environment Canada has described the situation as extremely dangerous and potentially life-threatening, urging residents to act without delay.

Safety Advice for Residents

People in the warning area are advised to seek shelter immediately in a basement, an interior room, or another sturdy building as severe weather approaches.

Those who cannot reach a secure shelter should move to a low-lying location and protect their head from flying debris.

Guidance for Boaters

Boaters should head back to shore immediately if it is safe to do so. If returning to land is not possible, they should move away from the storm’s path whenever possible, wear a lifejacket, lie face down, and shield their head.

According to Environment Canada, the warning is based on radar detection, indicating that the thunderstorm may be producing a tornado. However, a tornado has not yet been confirmed on the ground.

Emergency Management Ontario is also advising residents to take cover immediately if threatening weather develops.
