‘Disappointed’ Doug Ford Spoke Privately With Mark Carney After Billy Bishop Expansion Was Blocked
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has expressed his disappointment to Prime Minister Mark Carney over Ottawa’s decision to abandon plans to expand Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.
The proposed expansion would have allowed commuter jets to operate from the island airport. Ford reportedly communicated his concerns directly to Carney after the federal government decided not to proceed with the project.
Carney Cancels Airport Expansion Plan
Prime Minister Carney cancelled the Billy Bishop expansion before the proposal could create political difficulties for the Liberal government.
The decision could also affect political discussions surrounding the Beaches—East York byelection scheduled for August 31. Carney announced the byelection on Sunday.
Ottawa’s decision to cancel the Billy Bishop Airport expansion has created disagreement between the federal and Ontario governments. While Ford supported expanding jet services, Carney ended the proposal before it became a larger political issue.
