Online Passport Renewals Now Available to Canadians at Their Convenience
All eligible adult Canadians can now renew their passports online without waiting for an application slot, the federal government announced Tuesday.
Speaking at a press conference in Vancouver, Immigration Minister Lena Diab confirmed that the previous daily cap on online passport renewal applications had been removed.
Eligible Canadians applying from within the country can now begin the renewal process whenever it suits them, rather than waiting for online availability.
Change Aims to Reduce Passport Office Line-Ups
The expansion follows years of reports about Canadians facing lengthy waits at Service Canada offices and struggling to secure online passport appointments.
Service Canada and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada previously said limited resources made it difficult to meet the high level of demand.
Diab said removing the online limit could save hundreds of thousands of Canadians from making an additional trip, standing in line or dealing with unnecessary stress before travelling.
Passport Application Demand Expected to Increase
The government expects passport renewal demand to continue rising.
Annie Koutrakis, parliamentary secretary to the minister of jobs and families, said approximately 4.6 million passport applications are expected throughout 2026. That represents an increase from about 3.8 million applications submitted in the previous year.
Around two million of the anticipated applications are expected to come from people who may qualify to use the online service. The expanded system could allow many of them to avoid visiting a Service Canada location.
Online System Tested for Higher Application Volumes
Diab was asked whether the government’s online portal could manage a significant rise in applications following the removal of the daily cap.
She said the system had been designed and tested according to the application volumes expected by IRCC and Service Canada.
No Additional Passport Fee Increase Expected
Canadian passport fees increased in March for the first time since 2013. However, Diab said the expansion of online renewals would not lead to another immediate fee increase.
She explained that the earlier increase was needed to help cover the government’s cost of providing passport services.
Who Can Renew a Canadian Passport Online?
To complete a passport renewal online, applicants must:
- Be located within Canada
- Use an accepted online payment method
- Provide a digital passport photo taken by a commercial photographer
- Meet the government’s eligibility requirements
Applicants may also upload copies of supporting documents instead of mailing the original documents.
Canadians may still qualify for renewal when their passport is expired or close to expiring, provided it was issued within the previous 15 years.
In-Person and Mail Applications Remain Available
Canadians who cannot apply online or prefer traditional services can continue renewing their passports in person or by mail.
Express and urgent passport services also remain available for people who require faster processing.
Passport Processing Times and Service Guarantee
Online passport renewal applications continue to follow a processing standard of 20 business days.
The government is also keeping its 30-business-day passport service guarantee. Eligible applicants who submit complete applications may receive the service free of charge if the passport is not processed within the guaranteed period.
Removing the daily limit on online passport renewals gives eligible Canadians greater flexibility when updating their travel documents.
With passport demand expected to increase significantly in 2026, the expanded digital service could reduce office visits and ease pressure on Service Canada locations. Traditional, express and urgent application options will remain available.
