WestJet Lets Passengers Change or Cancel Select Flights Amid Strike Threat
WestJet is allowing passengers booked to travel between July 30 and August 4 to make a one-time change or cancel their reservation without paying a fee.
The Calgary-based airline introduced the temporary policy as its labour dispute with flight attendants continues. WestJet said the measure is intended to give travellers greater flexibility and confidence when managing their upcoming plans.
Flight Attendants Approve Strike Action
Earlier this month, WestJet flight attendants voted 99.4 per cent in favour of strike action.
The vote means approximately 4,400 flight attendants, represented by CUPE Local 8125, could legally begin a strike on August 2 if the union and airline fail to reach an agreement.
In an email sent to WestJet Rewards members, the airline said it remains confident that both sides can finalize a deal without disrupting passengers. However, WestJet acknowledged that the possibility of job action may create uncertainty for people with upcoming flights.
Union Welcomes WestJet’s Flexible Booking Policy
CUPE Local 8125 president Alia Hussain described WestJet’s decision to waive change and cancellation fees as an encouraging step.
Hussain said the labour dispute has likely caused concern among passengers and that the airline has a responsibility to provide flexible options to customers affected by the uncertainty.
She also emphasized that the new policy does not confirm that a strike will take place. Instead, she described it as a reasonable precaution that a responsible company should provide during ongoing labour negotiations.
According to Hussain, WestJet and the union remain at the bargaining table, and both parties are committed to reaching a settlement.
Negotiations Remain Ongoing
WestJet stated that its negotiating team continues to participate actively in discussions with the union.
The airline said it is prepared to make meaningful improvements for cabin crew members while also protecting WestJet’s long-term financial stability and operational sustainability.
Previous WestJet Labour Disruption
WestJet faced another major labour dispute during the summer of 2024, when unionized aircraft mechanics went on strike over the Canada Day long weekend.
That work stoppage disrupted flights and affected tens of thousands of passengers, highlighting the potential consequences of unresolved labour negotiations during a busy travel period.
WestJet’s fee-free booking policy gives passengers more control over flights scheduled between July 30 and August 4. Although a strike has not been confirmed, travellers should continue monitoring their reservations as negotiations between WestJet and CUPE Local 8125 progress.
