Parents Found Dead With Six Children in House Fire Identified

A Michigan couple and their six children have been identified after all eight family members were discovered dead inside their burning Grand Haven Township home.

Mandy Karolkiewicz, 39, her husband, Kris Karolkiewicz, 47, and their six children, who ranged in age from five to 15, were found inside the property on Friday. Relatives later publicly confirmed their identities.

Emergency crews discovered the family after extinguishing the fire. Ottawa County Sheriff’s Captain Jake Sparks said some of the victims appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds, although investigators have not disclosed how many were wounded.

Authorities are examining the deaths as a possible murder-suicide. However, the official causes and manners of death have not yet been confirmed.

Autopsy Results Still Pending

Sheriff’s detectives are continuing to investigate what happened before and during the house fire. Autopsies are expected to help determine how each family member died.

Mandy’s stepfather, Steve Lawwill, said the family was waiting for the remaining autopsy findings and an official police statement before providing further information.

Captain Sparks described the property as a complicated and complex scene. Police have said they are not searching for an outside suspect in connection with the deaths.

Mandy worked as a substitute teacher for Grand Haven Area Public Schools and was remembered for the kindness, patience and compassion she showed students.

Earlier in the year, the school district recognised her through its “Gold Standard Moments” programme, which allows employees to highlight colleagues who have made a meaningful difference within the school community.

The recognition praised Mandy for going beyond her normal duties, particularly when helping children experiencing difficult days. Colleagues described her as empathetic, dependable and always prepared to assist wherever she was needed.

She was also credited with helping make Peach Plains Elementary School a more supportive environment for both students and staff.

School District Offers Grief Support

Grand Haven Area Public Schools announced that grief-support services would be made available following news of Mandy’s death.

Superintendent Kristen Perkowski described the incident as a devastating loss for the wider community. She said many students, employees and local families could struggle to understand and process the tragedy, regardless of what investigators ultimately determine.

The district expressed sympathy for everyone affected and encouraged members of the school community to seek support when needed.

Relatives Share Their Grief

Mandy’s older sister, Molly Cessna, confirmed the deaths in an emotional social-media post.

She said her younger sister, brother-in-law and six nieces and nephews had died, adding that the family was struggling to understand what had happened. She asked friends and community members to continue praying as relatives attempted to piece together the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Mandy’s mother and stepfather also shared a family photograph and expressed gratitude for the happiness the couple and their children had brought into their lives. They said the loss had left the family completely shattered.

Detectives have not released a detailed timeline of events or confirmed whether the gunshot injuries occurred before the fire started.
