‘Shock and Disbelief’ After Morse, Sask., RCMP Detachment Burns Down

Residents of Morse, Saskatchewan, watched in shock on Sunday evening as the community’s RCMP detachment was destroyed by fire.

Even members of the Morse Fire Department were temporarily limited in what they could do as they worked to control the blaze.

Mayor Rocky Penner said the community was struggling to process the loss, describing the destruction of the police building as a major blow for the small town.

Fire Hydrant Failure Complicates Emergency Response

Firefighters faced an additional challenge when one of the town’s hydrants failed during the emergency. The department was forced to seek water assistance from nearby farmers and local Hutterite communities.

Penner said officials were already aware that two other hydrants required repairs. The town has hired a company based in Swift Current to complete the work but remains on a waiting list.

According to the mayor, the hydrant that failed had been operational when routine maintenance was carried out during the spring. That hydrant has now also been added to the town’s list of infrastructure concerns.

Residents Worried About Future Fire Safety

The possibility of another hydrant failing during an emergency has created concern among residents of Morse, a community of approximately 210 people located about 170 kilometres west of Regina.

Resident Lyle Patenaude said water availability could become a serious issue during future fires. Although the town previously upgraded its well, he questioned whether the current water system is sufficient for major firefighting operations.

Patenaude said he hoped municipal officials would examine the issue more closely and introduce improvements where necessary.

Fire Engulfs RCMP Building

The Morse Fire Department received the initial call shortly after 6 p.m. CST on Sunday.

Patenaude said a friend informed him about the fire by text message. When he later went outside, he saw that the RCMP building was almost completely engulfed, with flames rising through the roof as several emergency crews responded.

No one was working inside the detachment when the fire began, and no injuries were reported.

Calls for RCMP Detachment to Be Rebuilt

Mayor Penner said he would like the RCMP to rebuild its detachment in Morse.

Patenaude warned that losing the permanent police facility could result in reduced law enforcement coverage across the surrounding rural area.

RCMP Insp. Jill McLaren said the destruction of the building would not affect the police force’s commitment to protecting communities within the detachment’s service area.

She explained that the Saskatchewan RCMP regularly prepares contingency plans to ensure policing services can continue following unexpected incidents such as fires or damage to facilities.

Community Support Helps Firefighters

While the mayor remains focused on resolving the hydrant problems, he praised neighbouring farmers and Hutterite communities for providing assistance during the emergency.

Penner said the response demonstrated the importance of people supporting one another during difficult situations. He added that such cooperation helps preserve community spirit when residents and neighbours step forward to help.

Investigation Into Fire Begins

Investigators from the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency began examining the scene on Monday to determine what caused the fire.

The RCMP said there was no immediate indication that the blaze was suspicious.

The destruction of the Morse RCMP detachment has raised concerns about police coverage and the reliability of the town’s firefighting infrastructure.

Although no one was injured, the hydrant failure highlighted the need for urgent repairs. Local officials are now focused on improving fire preparedness while hoping the RCMP will rebuild its presence in the community.
